Manchester United defender Alex Telles is on the verge of leaving the club, with Sevilla in advanced talks to sign him on loan.
Telles joined United from Porto in 2020 to compete with first-choice left-back Luke Shaw. His time at Old Trafford has been disappointing, and new United manager Erik ten Hag has identified the 29-year-old as a transfer target following his appointment earlier this summer.
United have already recruited Feyenoord’s Tyrell Malacia to compete for the left-back position, with Telles now firmly established as a third choice.
Malacia, who was identified as a bright prospect by Ten Hag during their time in the Eredivisie, is likely to provide stiffer challenge to the England international in the early months of the season.
It is understood that Sevilla are close to agreeing a loan deal for Telles, albeit United will help smooth the move by paying a portion of his wages. Former Sevilla player Sergio Reguilon, who is now with Tottenham Hotspur, was Sevilla’s first pick for the left-back position.
Sevilla found the deal for Telles significantly easier to complete, especially with United’s assistance.
Nice have also inquired about Telles, but United have a solid relationship with Sevilla sporting director Monchi, and the transfer has progressed well thus far.
Monchi revealed to La Colina de Nervion over the weekend that left-back and center-back are key positions for Sevilla, saying:
“We will do what we can with a limited economic situation and limiting ourselves to the salary limit of La Liga.
“I hope that both positions are reinforced for next week. There are actions carried out by players that will allow us to maintain the level of the squad. Afterwards, we will continue working so that on August 31 the competitive level remains high despite the departures of important footballers such as Jules [Kounde] and Diego Carlos.”
He added to Estadio Deportivo: “There are names, nothing is closed yet, but progress has been made.”
Sevilla is also interested in Eric Bailly, albeit the defender is a top earner at United and a move may be more difficult to complete.
Bailly is one of several defensive players available for transfer before the end of the transfer window, including Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones, Brandon Williams, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
United are also on the lookout for new players, with no word yet on a contract for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
