Tottenham Hotspur in their last few seasons have gone through a certain turbulence. Ever since reaching the Champions League final under Pochettino in 2019, it has been only a downward curve for the north London club.

The frustrations of not winning a trophy in their best periods as a club was slowly building on them, ‘so close yet so far’ has always been the theme for Tottenham in recent times and the UCL final loss was the breaking point.

Pochettino may have been sacked the following season, but he lost the team on the night of that defeat to Liverpool.

Since then, Tottenham have been mediocre at best!

Mourinho tried, Nuno tried but Tottenham struggled!

It was only when Conte joined the club half way through last season have the tides began to change for the London club!

Bad times didn’t last long and Conte somehow managed a top 4 finish last season, leaving archrivals Arsenal behind on 5th.

Conte is a serial winner. Something that Tottenham dearly needs.

And in that quest to be a winner again, Conte and Tottenham have made their 6th signing of the summer in Djed Spence.

Antonio Conte is certainly building something and all Tottenham fans can be excited for the season to come!

As mentioned before, Spurs had previously recruited five experienced, ready-made players in Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, and Clement Lenglet during their summer revamp.

The acquisition of 21-year-old Spence from Middlesbrough on Tuesday morning for £12.5 million, with a potential £7.5 million in add-ons, is more in line with Tottenham’s prior transfer profile of acquiring young players with a lot of promise!

Conte, who has the ultimate say on acquisitions, revealed that bringing in Spence was not his idea, but he was more than glad to give the England U21 international the go-ahead.

“Honestly when I spoke [to the chairman] it was very simple because at the start of the conversation the club was very clear with me and said we reached an important achievement and maybe it was very difficult to think since November when I arrived to go into the Champions League but now we want to continue to grow, to grow together with ambition,” said Conte.

“Also, for the club, it’s not simple to go into the transfer market and sign players free like Perisic and Forster and sign players on loan like Lenglet, and to sign players with money like Richarlison and Bissouma and Spence.

“Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it. I said okay, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.”
