Liverpool had a very successful last season under Klopp and co. But it will always leave a bitter-sweet memory in the minds of the fans, due to the knowledge of what could have been.
2 domestic trophies, almost the Premier League, and a defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final. The quadruple was on for Liverpool for the longest of time – a feat which has never been done before.
But it evaded them in the cruellest way possible. Man City came from the dead with a magnificent 3-2 comeback, while Real Madrid won by a 1-0 courtesy of Courtois making some fine saves.
it was the case of so close yet so far, and Liverpool ended with just 2 domestic cups. Which in itself is not a bad achievement! But when you have gold in sight but end up with silver it always feels like a disappointment!
But, a new season means new chances to claim what they couldn’t last year, and Klopp and his men are more than ready!
The Reds are prepared to face Red Bull Salzburg in Austria this evening as they prepare for the season-opening Community Shield match against Manchester City on Saturday. Klopp has so increased the intensity to bring his players to peak physical condition.
Joe Gomez, who didn’t have the best season in 2021/22, is one of those hoping to impress Klopp in pre-season, and Virgil van Dijk believes he is one of the top English center-backs in the league.
Last season, Gomez only made 21 appearances for the Reds, with Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate ahead of him in Jurgen Klopp’s eyes. But, earlier this month, he committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new five-year contract, and Van Dijk has backed him to deliver.
“We spoke about it before he signed the deal and I’m just very happy that he’s staying at the club, staying with me. Also, I’m happy for the club that he’s signed,” Van Dijk told the club website.
“He is, in my opinion, [one of] if not the best English center-back around. Obviously we’ve both been very unlucky with the injuries we had. Obviously his time will come again and hopefully this season he can show that.”
